I am working as a groomer at a local pet store (I guess I'm not supposed to say the name, so we'll just call it Get Smart). I am not, thankfully, one of the pet stylists that do the frou-frou poodle clips or such; I am just a good ol' dog washer/ nail trimmer. I think it's gonna be awesome! AND they pay bank!!!

In other news, I am finally in contact with a few people about another snake. Matt and I really don't want another baby, since all the vets (and other knowledgeable people) I taked to said that babies were more likely to have internal parasites and were thus harder to keep, wheras adults, if they have lived in the same place for several years, were less likely to have those parasites.

If any snake owners read this, I'd love to have your input.

Wow. The weather is absolutely crazy here right now. All of today until 6 p.m. was clear and very hot, peaking at about 98 degrees. Then at 6, the wind picked up in huge gusts. It then calmed down a little, but is not blowing hugely again (weather reports say between 40 and 60 mph gusts, with big thunder and lightning and a TON of dust. The weather advisory says it's gonna be a gigantic dust/thunderstorm with scattered downpours.

On one hand, I love huge storms. They make me anticipate the coming of the Lord. On the other hand, the farmers are now getting really desparate. They were supposed to cut hay 2 weeks ago, but with the rain they haven't been able to. Now the 10 biggest barns around here (along with a lot of the smaller places, like Dr. Mike's and Far West) are almost out of hay. People are starting to panic.

Yep, I just graduated college and I am writing notes for fun.

The Things I Do When I'm Not Doing Anything

Well, the last few weeks have really shown me what I would do if I lived in a world with too much time on my hands. I have seen several new movies (Star Wars, Madagascar, Star Wars, Crash, and Batman Begins in that order), watched several old movies (including Ocean's Twelve and all three Harry Potters) read (or reread) over twenty books, worked out and/or ridden with a modicum of consistency, become an amateur html/css nerd, cleaned sometimes, eaten enough cup o'noodles to preserve me for a long time, and caught up on almost all of my missed sleep for the past 4 years.

Geez, I need a freakin' job.

Star Wars: Definitely worth the 7 bucks to see it the first time, but probably not worth the 7 bucks to see it the second time. The dialogue was just... lacking. The truly good actors were able to (barely) rise above their bad scrpit, but the others just couldn't, really.

Crash: This was a really, really good movie. Very powerful and thought-provoking. Matt and I had a long discussion after the movie about our own prejudices.

Sometimes I think that because my prejudices are not for ethnic groups, they don't really exist. But I realized that I view people who hold lower socioeconomic status than me in a negative light. I don't know if that is made better or worse by my poor upbringing. Am I afraid that if I associate with the lower class, I might "catch" being poor again? That I would become just like my mother and smoke and drink and curse in front of my children? That I would become numb to the people around me who abuse their spouses or children, or do those things myself? Having experience of "what life is really like" when you're white trash doesn't necessarily make me a more understanding person. Any thoughts on this?

Anyway, As I told Rebecca, I don't know if I'll make it down to the wedding. If I get this job at Petsmart, I will not be able to make it down. But if I don't, I think I will be able to. I really want to come down and I really want a job. boo.

All I have to say is: COME SOONER!!!!!

Only 32 days till this comes out... I am so excited I'm shivering. Really. If I had a tail, it would be wagging. Just so you know.

    The Final Straw

Ah, here she is in all her glory. Matt totalled at least 7.5 hours making this work; he is almost an html/ css expert now. He got remuneration in several lime, strawberry, and wild berry popsicles, though I think he may have been underpaid. He is truly wonderful to me, and not just in the html respect. What a blessing I have in him as my husband.

Anyway, it is bedtime for bonzos, as my mom would say. Feel free to make comments on the last post or the one about books: I was really serious when I said I wanted your feedback.

    I'm a Lazy Bum

Ah, the lazy life of an unemployed college graduate. Today, for instance, I went to church, read the first 1/2 of Love and Garbage by Ivan Klima, then spent several hours creating a new look for the blog with Matt, then read a little more, then took a nap, then had dinner. Yesterday the big event was baking shortbread, etc. One might think that with all this time on my hands, I would clean house or study or take up a new hobby or something, but once one has established that there is nothing to do, one finds it difficult to break free of that idea.

Fellow unemployed college-aged students, how do you keep yourselves motivated?

And by me changing something, I mean Matt, since HE is the ever-sexy criminal mastermind.

    I love it!!

Alright, so I am trying to get a job at PETsMART, which I never know how to write correctly until today. I had an interview on Tuesday, with a lovely woman, that went VERY well. She told me I was the best applicant she had seen! Today,I had a second and more extensive interview with the director, who was slightly less lovely. However, I think the interview still went well. Wish me luck!

Alright, so as of last Friday I am actually a college graduate! This last class (a three week Jan-Term style course on Interpersonal communications) was fun, easy, and took time out of my otherwise mindlessly boring day. I actually wound up missing two out of the 385 total points that one could obtain. I don't think I've ever scored that high in a class before.

Anyway, that job I had this summer teaching at the horseback riding camp is no longer. Turns out a church friend's granddaughter really needed a job, then the farm started having financial troubles, and before I knew it I was laid off like a factory worker in the midwest. So now I am unemployed, and I seem to lack all the necessary skills to make me hireable. No retail experience?!?!? No waitressing experience?!?!? Who cares that you just spent four years getting a biology degree! I have turned in, up to date, 17 applications. No job. So I am both bored and filled with a sense of worthlessness.

As a result, I have been reading a great deal. Some of the books have been fabulous (like Saint Maybe by Anne Tyler) and some have been less satisfying (turns out, I don't like Elizabeth Peters that much). If you would like a list of my so-far recommended reads, let me know.

I read one of the more recent Pulitzer winners, The Known World, but I actually was uninspired. When I emailed one of the Whit- English professors I deeply respect, this is what he said:
"One thing I've learned along the way is that prizes in the US such as the Pulitzer & the National Book Award don't necessarily mean a dam thing; the publishing / prizegiving world is utterly incestuous and mutual-back-scratching. THe BOOKER Prize, on the other hand, in England, is pretty much a guarantee that the book is terrific."

Since then, I have read one Booker Prize winner, Heat and Dust, and one Booker Prize author, Margaret Atwood. Both were excellent, and I think I may just keep on reading my way through them.

Here's where you come in, O faithful blogreader. What are some of your favorite books? What do you think I should read this summer? Thanks for the input!
